AstraZeneca has launched an anti-impotence drug to combat sexual dysfunction.
The company, which launched the drug in India on Tuesday, announced on Thursday that it had received a "solicited approval" from the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for its anti-impotence medicine, Viagra.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, was found in clinical trials at the Indian Institute of Sexual Medicine, and it was recommended that the drug be tested for effectiveness.
But the FDA said that the drug is "not appropriate for use in men with erectile dysfunction" and urged the company to change its treatment regimen to include this medication in men with the condition.
Viagra was developed by the drug maker Eli Lilly and is known by its brand name, sildenafil.
The drug is one of the first drugs to be approved by the US FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Sildenafil, which is the active ingredient of the drug, is designed to enhance blood flow to the penis, which helps men get and maintain an erection.
The drug is already being used for other conditions such as premature ejaculation, pulmonary arterial hypertension and premature ejaculation disorder.
"The FDA has recommended that sildenafil be used only as part of a treatment plan for patients who have experienced adverse effects with treatment with sildenafil," Dr S. Kumar, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), said in a statement.
Sildenafil is an oral treatment that treats erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis, thereby helping men achieve and maintain an erection.
It was developed by Lilly in 2003 and is now available in over 60 countries.
