CVS has made a deal with Pfizer Inc. to buy rights to sell Viagra in the United States.
The acquisition comes a little over a year after a rival generic drugmaker agreed to pay $3.2 billion to settle a lawsuit over its alleged failure to warn about the safety risk of impotence drug Viagra.
Pfizer was the maker of the impotence pill, which is also known as Levitra. The settlement resolves the lawsuit, Pfizer said in a statement.
The suit, brought by plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit against the U. S. government, was filed Friday in the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota.
In its settlement, Pfizer said it reached a price of $4.25 per tablet, and would pay $3.25 to $3.75 per tablet, according to court documents.
The court-martial was billed as the largest price increase in a decade for the deal.
Viagra, sold by CVS as the brand name Levitra, has been nicknamed “The Little Blue Pill.”
“This is a deal that should be celebrated,” said David Brennan, chief executive of Pfizer, which made the deal with CVS.
Pfizer’s deal, the biggest since the U. government bought Pfizer Inc. in 1998, comes as a major change for the company, which had been developing and selling its own impotence drug.
Pfizer’s deal with CVS will expire in 2016 and will only be for generic products.
The deal also will allow Pfizer to sell its own Viagra in the United States, which would mean it could be able to charge its sales representatives more, said Michael J. Sullivan, chairman of the board of directors of CVS.
Viagra has been one of Pfizer’s top sellers since its patent expired in 1998.
CVS, which owns the U. Food and Drug Administration, said Friday that its deal with Pfizer would end its monopoly on erectile dysfunction drugs.
“This is a good business opportunity and a good move by Pfizer to continue to innovate,” CVS said in a statement. “The future of the company is bright and bright.”
Pfizer’s move comes as a major change for the company. CVS had hoped to acquire rival drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline Plc in 2007, which was looking to sell its popular heartburn drug Zantac.
But the deal was not made, and Glaxo was forced to cut ties with Pfizer’s parent company, which owns U. drugs for rheumatology and cholesterol, and rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune disorders.
Glaxo, which sells its cholesterol drug Glumetza and other drugs for rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, had been looking for a new partner in the drug business since the late 1990s.
The deal, known as Apotex, will allow Apotex to sell its generic form of the heartburn drug Zetia in the United States.
Pfizer said the deal would last until 2016, when Pfizer can make Viagra available over-the-counter.
